Pros and Cons of Staying in South Pigalle

Although there isn’t a hard border, South Pigalle occupies the north of the 9th and 10th arrondissements, roughly from rue de Rochechouart to Place de Clichy. Here are some factors to consider when deciding if the neighborhood is a good fit for you.

Pros

Cons

  • It’s a bit further away from some popular tourist sites and neighborhoods (but several useful métro lines go through the district).
  • It’s less traditional and picturesque than other areas (but still nice).
  • It has fewer classic French restaurants – if that’s what you’re looking for (however, there are some).

Grand Pigalle Hotel

This chic boutique hotel in the very heart of the district is another excellent hotel that perfectly embodies the “South Pigalle” spirit. Set within a typical Haussmannian stone building from the mid-19th century, the hotel is a short walk from Place Pigalle, which means it’s encircled by shops, bars, and restaurants, two of which are right in the hotel — its popular cocktail bar and an outpost of highly-coveted restaurant Frenchie. Its 37 plush rooms have different themes, some with geometric or light gold-speckled wallpaper, and others have wall sections in deep forest green. Rooms under the roof have slanted ceilings, which might not appeal to all guests, but these also boast views over the rooftops of the area, including the white dome of Sacré-Coeur.

Maison Souquet

Set within a former maison close, a “house of pleasure” from the turn-of-the-20th century, this is one of Paris’s most romantic hotels and South Pigalle’s most luxurious. It’s hidden on a quiet side street near the Moulin Rouge and Montmartre, only distinguishable by red lamps next to its entrance. Famed designer Jacques Garcia created a Belle-Epoque boudoir ambiance in both common spaces and rooms. Guests can enjoy a drink in the Arabian-inspired lounge, the sumptuous library bar, or the tranquil winter garden. The 20 rooms are named after historic courtesans and are decorated in period antiques, sensual paintings, and heart-shaped lighting. For some extra pampering, there’s a spa with a pool, steam room, and massage room.
