Set on a hill overlooking the city, it truly gives you the feel of staying in a French village – but it’s far from sleepy. You can enjoy buzzing local life as well as quiet cobbled back streets. That doesn’t mean it’s the right neighborhood for everyone, nor that it doesn’t have some disadvantages. Pros and Cons of Staying in Montmartre

Montmartre is one of the most popular places to visit in all of Paris, which offers some benefits and less appealing aspects. Before we launch into our selection of top hotels in Montmartre, here are some things to consider while deciding if the area’s a good match for you.

Pros

  • You’ll have a charming village-like ambiance.
  • By spending more time here, you’ll enjoy the local side of the area.
  • There are gorgeous views of the city and from some hotels.
  • In the mornings and evenings, you can have the area all to yourself without the daytime crowds.
  • There’s little traffic, so it’s safer for kids.

Cons

  • You’ll be a bit further away from some other popular sites and neighborhoods (but there are good métro links and you can be at the Louvre and Notre Dame in 30 minutes)
  • You’ll have to deal with crowds in some areas if you walk around these during the day.
  • It’s very hilly, so it isn’t the best match for visitors with mobility challenges.
  • There are fewer good restaurants in the area (but there ARE some good ones!).

Monsieur Aristide

This chic boutique hotel is tucked away on a small street south of Montmartre’s main local street, rue des Abbesses. The hotel is a modern homage to the historic Montmartre personality, Aristide Bruant. Rooms have bright white walls, funky vintage art objects, frame prints, and other eclectic design items. It has suites, family rooms, and a small apartment, making it a great family hotel in Montmartre.

One of the very best hotels in Montmartre, this historic hotel also boasts sweeping views over the city. Originally opened in 1911 and refurbished in 2023, rooms have a clean modern look with touches of turquoise, navy blue, or ginger. If you can, book a room with a view of the city which also features the Eiffel Tower. For families, there are larger studio rooms and suites that sleep three or four. Another plus is the hotel’s rooftop bar and restaurant – a bit of a Parisian secret – where you can enjoy a drink and spectacular views over the city.
