A great way to add some extra magic to your Paris trip is to stay a night or two in a castle. There are hundreds of castles you can stay in all around France, and there are actually some FANTASTIC options not far from Paris. To help you narrow down the tons of choices, I’ve brought together this selection of the best castle hotels near Paris. There are options for all budgets and styles, from options that are less than 100 euros to luxurious getaways, so hopefully you’ll find the perfect fit for you.

Some are out in the countryside, which is a big plus for ambiance, but might seem hard to reach. The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to rent a car to get to them. You can take a train to the nearest station, then get a taxi from there, or arrange a transfer from the castle hotel. I’ve also included a couple of chateaus that are in small towns that have train stations, so these are pretty convenient.

There’s actually one castle right in Paris. Tucked away in the posh 16th district, this luxury hotel is within a GORGEOUS 19th-century mansion. It’s pretty expensive (over 1,000 euros per night), but it’s downright fabulous. It’s the perfect match for a romantic trip or a Paris-based honeymoon. Rooms are super comfy and have geometry or large floral prints and top-quality linens and other amenities. There’s a gastronomic restaurant, a pretty terrace in the garden, and a Guerlin spa. Leaving the plush hideaway, you can easily do your Paris sightseeing and then return to your glamorous castle at the end of the day. (WA)

Château Mont Royal Chantilly

This regal castle hotel near Chantilly is only an hour north of Paris. It’s close to a train station so I think it’s a great choice for an easy night or two at a pretty spectacular castle-hotel. It’s surrounded by an ancient forest so the setting is really beautiful and relaxing. It was built in the early 20th century, but rooms have been recently modernized and have a simple yet stylish modern decor. Walls and linens are in light tones which go well with light wood furnishings. Most rooms have a view over the forest, and premium rooms also have private balconies.

There’s no need to leave the hotel during your stay because there’s also a gourmet restaurant and spa, but I suggest going to visit the Chateau de Chantilly, one of my favorite historic castles you can tour near Paris. It has an amazing art museum, dreamy gardens and a living horse museum. (WA)

Château de Villiers-Le-Mahieu

If you’re looking for a fairytale castle, then this chateau, which is only a 45-minute drive west of Paris, could be the perfect match. Traveling down a tree-lined lane, you’re met with two large ivy-laden towers that look straight out of a storybook. There are some more modern rooms in some annex buildings, but the rooms in the castle have a more classic French look, so be sure to check your options when booking. It has plenty of great facilities, including a spa, an outdoor and an indoor pool, and two tennis courts. The restaurant has a seasonal all-you-can-eat buffet available at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you won’t have to travel to find a good meal. (WA)

Château de Bourron-Marlotte

This charming 17th-century castle is found in the countryside just south of Fontainebleau, so about an hour southeast of Paris. I really like the look of this castle, which is in the shape of a square encircled by a moat. The rooms are individually decorated with floral or striped wallpaper, antiques and canopy beds. You can spend your days strolling its pretty grounds, reading in the lovely sitting room, playing tennis or visiting the historic castles in the area like the Chateau de Fontainebleau or Vaux-le-Vicomte, both included in our Paris Day Trips Guide. Domaine de Primard

Situated an hour’s drive west of Paris, this 18th-century aristocratic manor house has been beautifully converted into a chic boutique hotel. No frilly curtains or gilded mirrors here. Instead, the decor is pure and elegant with exposed wood, white walls, and cool light fixtures. It has wonderful gardens, created by an award-winning landscape architect, which are home to a vegetable patch that supplies the castle’s fabulous farm-to-table restaurant. There’s also a heated pool and a large spa overlooking the orchard that has a sauna and a Japanese bath, so it’s ideal for a relaxing getaway not far from Paris. (WA)

If you want a convenient castle stay in the Loire Valley, consider this amazing gourmet hotel. I’ve stayed here before, and I absolutely LOVED it. Found right in the town of Blois and only 1.5 hours by train from Paris, the hotel is within the 17th-century castle of Louis XIII’s brother, Gaston d’Orléans. The interiors have massive wooden beams, super comfortable beds, and soothing contemporary floral patterns that evoke the Loire River. After a day of sightseeing in Blois and the area, sip a glass of Loire bubbly wine overlooking the town’s castle or relax in the hotel’s spa and outdoor pool facing the Blois Castle. You don’t have to go far for dinner – the hotel has two restaurants, a 2-Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant and a more casual brasserie.

Château d’Augerville

Located on a 250-acre private estate, this is another of the best closest castle hotels from Paris. Different from some of the others, it has huge Medieval towers which give it a lot of personality. The enchanting ambiance continues inside with crystal chandeliers, historic paintings, and wooden-beamed ceilings. Rooms are tastefully decorated in modern furnishings, but some of the superior rooms and suites have historic features like giant stone fireplaces. The castle has two restaurants, a spa, and a renowned golf course, so it’s a great option for golfers. A shout out to all chocolate fans – the castle has its own small chocolate factory. (WA)

Château de La Rivière

This is another enchanting castle that feels like it’s straight out of a fairytale. About a 90-minute drive from Paris, it’s got rustic towers, a moat, and stunning grounds. The magical atmosphere is further enhanced as you step into the chateau, which is decked out in crystal chandeliers, precious antiques, and four-poster canopy beds. You can take strolls in the large park, pamper yourself in the spa, take a dip in the indoor pool, or have candlelit dinners next to the fireplace. I’d say this is one of the top picks for a super romantic getaway.

Château de Bonnemare

This cozy castle is found in Normandy, near the city of Rouen, which makes it a good option for a castle that’s in the countryside, but not too far from a train station. It’s more of a B&B than a hotel, so it’s got a friendly, more personal feel than some of the others on this list. Made of red brick, it was built in the mid-1500s for a friend of King Henri II. Each of the chateau’s rooms has a different look, but if you’d really like to sleep like a king or queen, book the “Parade” suite, which was inspired by Louis XIV’s sleeping quarters and has massive canopy beds and luscious red-toned furnishings – it’s just wow!

This mini castle in the Loire town of Amboise is another great base for exploring this beautiful region without a car. I’ve stayed here and really liked it as its small size makes it feel like your own personal castle. The staff are super welcoming and the ambiance is less stuffy than larger castle hotels. King François I apparently stayed here with his mistress Diane de Poitiers, so this juicy tidbit adds a fun element to your stay. It only has 9 rooms which are decorated in modern furniture, some of which are gilded or hand carved. The two-bedroom “luxury room” can sleep 6, so it’s a good fit for families. The hotel has a cozy library, a pool, and is within walking distance to restaurants, the Chateau d’Amboise, and train station. (WA)
