Few Paris hostels (or even hotels for that matter) can boast as unique a location as this youth hostel housed in three 17th-century buildings. What’s more, its super central location in the south Marais means that you can get virtually anywhere in the city on foot, which also saves you money on transportation. Open year-round, it has fully renovated private and shared rooms as well as a restaurant and an activity room. In a mere five to ten-minute walk, you can reach Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, the Marais with its fun bars and vintage shops, and the banks of the Seine, perfect for free sightseeing strolls and money-saving picnics.

One of the first “hip” hostels in Paris, Generator is still considered one of the best hostels in Paris. Found near the trendy Canal St-Martin, the designer hostel has a lively bar with DJs, a rooftop terrace with sweeping views of the rooftops of Paris, Montmartre, and Sacré-Coeur, and a stylish lounge area with a games room. It has four to 10-bed dorms as well as private rooms, some with their own terraces. If you’re tempted away from the great ambiance of the hostel, nearby you can spend hours ambling or relaxing along the Canal St-Martin, perusing the area’s cool shops, running or chilling in the Buttes-Chaumont Park, or simply cruise into the métro station found in front of the building to get further afield.

The People – Belleville

With a sunny terrace and funky lounge for socialising, this is one of the best hostels in Paris for solo travellers. Situated in the northeastern Belleville neighbourhood, known for its artsy and edgy vibe, it’s one of the best places to stay for a local experience. It has four, six, and eight-bed dorms all with screens, electrical sockets, and WiFi access. It also has an eco-friendly approach, from using natural soaps to water-saving hourglasses in showers.

Situated near Place de la Nation, on the border of the cool 11th district and the more local 20th, this is another top Paris hostel for a local experience. Great vibes flow throughout its welcoming common areas which include a restaurant serving killer pizzas and an amazing rooftop bar where you might catch some local musical talent on the stage. UCPA Sport Station Hostel Paris

Another recent addition to the Paris hostel scene, this sports-oriented hostel is located in the north of the city and not far from the Stade de France. Ideal for keeping up with your workout routine, it has a huge gym (with a climbing wall and squash, badminton, and padel courts) a vast private garden, and is near the modern Rosa Parks Park, the massive Parc de la Villette for outdoor sports and Canal de l’Ourcq for longer runs. Don’t worry if you’re not fitness-minded, the friendly hostel is open to all and also has a chill zone, restaurant, and bar with DJ nights – dancing is exercise too after all.
