Helpful Tips for Gluten-Free Travelers to Paris

  • How to say gluten-free in French: Luckily, the term is quite similar to English – sans gluten – which is pronounced: “sawh-glooten”. If you’re unsure when reading a menu, you could ask waiters, “Quels plats sont sans gluten?” (Which dishes are gluten-free?). You might also that some menus indicate gluten-free dishes with the label “SG”.
  • Eat at a creperie: French savory crepes (called galettes) that are served at sit-down creperies are always made with buckwheat flour, which is naturally gluten-free. Dessert crepes are usually made with wheat flour, but you can always ask for a buckwheat flour crepe to be used instead. A small word of caution, this is not the case at takeaway crepe stands, which often use wheat flour for both savory and sweet crepes.
  • Virtually ALL Parisian restaurants naturally have gluten-free options: The French LOVE potatoes, so in most restaurants, as long as you eat meat, you can find gluten-free options. Side dishes are usually listed with the description of the dish, but if they aren’t, it’s always good to double-check. For example, the classic dish boeuf-bourguignon is often served with wheat pasta.
  • Macarons might (or might not) be gluten-free: These popular French treats made with almond flour technically should be gluten-free, but some places, like the famed Ladurée, use some wheat flour in their recipe… so it’s always best to ask.
